Call for Papers Theorizing the Web conference
The goal of the second annual Theorizing the Web conference is to expand the range and depth of theory used to help us make sense of how the Internet, digitality, and technology have changed the ways humans live. We hope to bring together researchers from a range of disciplines, including sociology, communications, philosophy, economics, English, history, political science, information science, the performing arts and many more. In addition, we invite session and other proposals by tech-industry professionals, journalists, and other figures outside of academia.
Submit abstracts online at http://tinyurl.com/TtW12.
Topics include :
Citizen/participant journalism and media curation
Identity, self-documentation and self-presentation
Privacy and publicity on the Web
Cyborgism and the technologically-mediated body (e.g., body modification)
Political mobilization, uprisings, revolutions and riots on social media (including the Arab Spring/Fall, Occupy)
Repression and the Web : Surveillance, wire-tapping, anonymity, pseudonymity
Code, values and design
Epistemology of the Web : Wikipedia, Global Voices, « filter bubbles » and the prosumption of information
Theorizing whose Web ? How power and inequality (e.g., the Digital Divide) manifest on the Web
Mobile computing, online/offline space
Digital dualism and « augmented reality »
What art/literature can offer research and theory of the Web
Intersections of gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and disability with respect to any of the above topics
We plan to curate 7 open submission panels, 4 presenters each as well as a couple invited panels and a keynote session on social media and social movements with Andy Carvin (NPR) and Zeynep Tufekci (UNC). Other events may be added before April.
The first Theorizing the Web conference happened last year. We decided to do this because there often is not a place for scholars who are theorizing about the Internet and society to gather and share their work. The 2011 program consisted of 14 panels, two workshops, two symposia (one on social media’s role in the Arab revolutions, the other, on social media and street art), two plenaries (by Saskia Sassen on « Digital Formations of the Powerful and the Powerless » and George Ritzer on « Why the Web Needs Post-Modern Theory »), and a keynote by danah boyd from Microsoft Research and NYU on « Privacy, Publicity Intertwined. » Presenters traveled from around the world (including Hong Kong and New Zealand). The archive is available at : http://www.cyborgology.org/theorizingtheweb/2011
There will be a new website with much more information coming January 2012.
For further inquiries, email theorizingtheweb@gmail.com
Call for Artists
In addition to traditional presentations, the conference will feature a variety of artistic and multimedia events. As such, we invite proposals from artists for relevant works or performances in any medium as well as for discussion of such pieces. We seek to display art of all forms during the conference and after at a reception. This could include, but is not limited to, paintings, sculpture, poetry, fiction writing, digital art, and performance art.

Quels usages, quelles pratiques ?
http://www.colloquelehavre2012.org

Workshop on Social media visualization (Socmedvis)
June 4, 2012
Social media study and analysis brings researchers from many fields into a single setting. Even though the tasks of these researchers are varied, data visualization and analytics plays an important role. For industry and academics alike, visualization of social media data helps with hypothesis formation and supports the explanation of phenomena. The SocMedVis Workshop provides a venue to discuss how we can apply data visualization and analytic techniques to social media data.
The workshop caters to designers and consumers of interactive visualization methods to better understand the applications of these techniques to social media data for the purposes of analysis and entertainment. The workshop is open to both novel visualization techniques and applications of visualization techniques to social media data sources. We strongly encourage interdisciplinary contributions that discuss the application of visualization to social media research and how these techniques can better support user tasks in other domains.

Workshop on real-time analysis and mining of social streams (Ramss)
June 4, 2012
The recent increase of real-time data provided by users on social networking services has leveraged an importance gain of the real-time processing of social streams. Processing the streams in real-time can help enhance search engines, news media, and many other systems by feeding them with fresh knowledge about current affairs. Performing such analysis in real-time is of utmost importance for early reporting of breaking news, events, trends, and knowledge related to current affairs. However, analyzing social streams in real-time makes the task more challenging as it requires making decisions without clue of what will be next in the stream. The RAMSS workshop aims to bring together experts in the real-time analysis and mining of social streams, as well as to further develop and exchange knowledge around these tasks.

When the citiy meets the citizen workshop (Wcmcmw)
June 4, 2012
Social media has played a key role in providing insights into people’s activities, opinions and day-to-day lives. These detailed user-generated information-streams offer a unique opportunity for cities to understand and engage their citizens. The research domain of smarter cities aims to monitor disruptive events (e.g., emergencies, Olympics), analyze social behaviour, identify citizens’ sentiment and understand their interactions with services. On the other side, cities can use their understanding of the citizen to foster stronger relationships with the diverse communities in their constituencies. This understanding could be applied to mobilize people on important issues such as education, health care, political engagement and community awareness. This workshop is interested in research that aims to progress both sides of this relationship, but particularly research that works towards closing the loop between the city and the citizens.

Workshop on the potential of Social media tools and data for journalists in the news media industry (socmednews)
June 4, 2012
The news media industry has recognized that there is an undeniable shift in the way content is produced, consumed and distributed, including the sharing thereof. Nowadays, there are numerous cases in which « established » news agencies and news outlets are not the first point of call for users because everybody equipped with e.g. a smartphone can capture and publish events as they unfold on a platform of their choice (e.g. on YouTube, in Facebook, via Twitter etc). For this reason, news media organizations are increasingly depending on content from and information residing in Social Networks. However, news organizations are facing one crucial question when it comes to using content from the social web: « Can I trust this source? Is the source reliable? « . The aim of this workshop is to encourage participants to discuss, share and exchange ideas and results on social media research, technologies, and applications in two essential areas: newsgathering in the social web and filtering / analyzing the available data (e.g. by relevance, reliability, accuracy etc).

Call for papers International Research Conference in Service Management
La Londe les Maures, France May 29, 30, 31 & June 1, 2012
The first International Research Conference in Service Management was held in 1990, with the aim of overcoming traditional boundaries between disciplines. 2012 will bring round the twelfth edition. By enabling thorough and fruitful exchange between some hundred or so participants from different countries, this formula has proved itself.
The conference is structured so that there are only two competitive sessions occurring at the same time. Each author has forty-five minutes to present the paper and to lead a discussion with the audience. Many leading universities from all over the world have sent participants who, through their participation, established new networks or rejuvenated old ones to exchange ideas and knowledge. At each session, both academics and practitioners participate in debates, dialogs, and formal presentations. Friendliness and informality are part of the tradition of the seminar, greatly enhanced by the beautiful setting in a Mediterranean seashore environment. In addition to the rich intellectual exchange, the conference provides a visit to the magnificent and the car-free Porquerolles Island.
Starting from this year, a poster session featuring emerging research ideas and work in progress will also be available.

This special issue aims to foster Information Systems research in understanding, illustrating, and explaining how IS forms an inherent aspect of human activity and a means of symbolic action. We invite submissions that advance IS theory and research on the intersection of information systems and symbolic action through theoretical review, analysis, and development, empirical and design studies, or large-scale empirics and methodology development. Central issues to be tackled revolve around novel conceptualizations of IS, uses and design of IS, and methods for investigating IS as grounds, means, and outcomes of symbolic action. (The full call is available here : http://www.misq.org/)
Potential authors that would appreciate early feedback regarding the suitability of their material to the special issue are encouraged to submit a research-in-progress version of their manuscript to a developmental workshop that will be organized in conjunction with ICIS 2011. (Potential authors may also send inquiries to the editors that include extended abstracts for advice about relevance to the special issue.) The plan is to invite authors of papers that pass the first round of review to a second developmental workshop in conjunction with ECIS 2012. These workshops are not mandatory but are strongly encouraged as they aim to support authors in preparing and developing their manuscripts. Both workshops will be hosted by the AIS Special Interest Group on Pragmatist IS Research (SIGPrag). More information about these events will be announced at http://www.sigprag.org/
Submission deadline for the ICIS 2011 workshop is August 1, 2011.

Call for Papers: Policy and Internet Special Issue on Online Collective Action and Policy Change
14 October 2011 Oxford Internet Institute
Policy and Internet, the first major peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal investigating the impact of the internet on public policy, is inviting submissions for a special issue on ‘Online Collective Action and Policy Change’, to be published in January 2013 (paper deadline: 31 March 2012). The issue Guest Editors are Dr Andrea Calderaro and Dr Anastasia Kavada.
The Internet has created a new interface between collective action and policy making: it opens new channels for social coordination and mobilisation, and it offers multiple platforms from where to influence public opinion and policy makers. The recent wave of protests that has swept authoritarian regimes like Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, but also western liberal democracies like Greece, Spain, and the UK, offers new empirical evidence of the impact that online interactions and information exchange can have on policy making.
In addition to these recent instances of contentious politics, advocacy and grassroots groups are increasingly using online technologies to empower local communities and direct change in the policies that most affect them. And issues at the heart of online governance, like Internet regulation, are motivating many collective efforts directed to shaping file-sharing policies, free software, or digital communication rights.
This special issue calls for academic papers reporting novel empirical research on how online collective action drives policy change, in any of its ramifications. This includes topics such as:
- The coordination of protests and mobilisations using online technologies, and their impact on public opinion and policy making.
- The mechanisms through which online collective action grows and diffuses, and how or when they trigger a policy reaction.
- The impact of online activity on issue salience, and the responsiveness of policy makers.
- The interplay between online collective action and the offline policy cycle, or how policy makers deal with new sources of instability and disruption.
Paper submissions
The online submission deadline for papers is 31 March 2012. Please indicate in the cover letter that the paper is intended for the special issue ‘Online Collective Action and Policy Change’. Authors are advised to consult the journal’s Guide for Authors before submitting their paper.

Call for Papers Journal of Service Research Special Issue on IT-Related Service: A Multidisciplinary Perspective
Journal of Service Research calls for submissions for a special interdisciplinary issue on IT-related service. Much of the radical transformation of the world economy from an industrial to a post-industrial service society comes from the contribution of information technology (IT) to service sectors and from IT as service. This special issue is multidisciplinary in nature as many disciplines play a role in the service economy. We invite scholars from marketing, information systems, operations management, human resources, finance/accounting, economics, and
organizational research to submit papers on IT-related service. We are particularly interested in papers that consider the productivity and quality of IT-related service and focus on the relationship with customers (including B2C, B2B and C2C), in contrast to technology-centered approaches to service management and business interaction. Papers that include empirical, analytical, and conceptual approaches that develop or extend theory are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
– IT’s role in providing cost-effective service
– IT mediated or supported self-service
– IT-related service productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction
– IT servitization
– IT-related service innovations and business transformation
– IT-related service management and marketing
– IT-related service value networks
– IT service, customer service, and service satisfaction
– IT-related service and consumer behavior
– IT-related service and employee attitudes and behavior
– IT-related service economics and pricing
– IT-related service engineering, systems, and computing
We expect this special issue to lead to significant cross-fertilization across fields and, therefore, to particularly high impact for the papers. The issue is sponsored by the National Science Council of Taiwan and the Center for Excellence in Service at the University of Maryland.
The best paper will receive a first-place award of $2,000, and up to three additional papers will receive honorable-mention awards of $1,000 each. In addition, each award will include an invitation for the paper to be presented at the Frontiers in Service Conference in 2013 (with complementary registration) that will coincide with the publication of the special issue.
Please submit manuscripts to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/journsr and designate ?Special Issue on IT-Related Service.
